Promising storms fail to deliver

A PROMISING rain band which moved into the region on Sunday has failed to provide significant relief for the majority of local farmers, with lower than anticipated totals falling.

Reader Shane Wilson captured this amazing photograph of a recent Gunnedah storm.

Widespread thunderstorms were forecast for the north-west slopes and plains over the past few days, with hopes more than 25mm of rain would drench the region.

Instead the scattered storms delivered a top of 15mm at Mullaley, 11mm at Curlewis, 9mm at Gunnedah, 7.2mm at Premer and 5mm at Boggabri.

There is a high chance of thunderstorms continuing today however, with a 60 per cent chance of rain tomorrow.

The weather front did deliver cooler temperatures to Gunnedah residents, dropping from a high of 42.3 degrees Celsius on Sunday to a top of 30 degrees today.

Temperatures are forecast to remain in the low 30s for the rest of this week.

Wildlife carers have asked Gunnedah people to put out bowls of water for koalas during the hot weather, but to make sure they are away from dogs’ bowls.
